Florence (about 367,000 inhabitants) is the administrative centre of the homonymous province and of the Tuscany region, of which it is the largest city, as well as the main historic, artistic and economical-administrative centre.
It is considered the “cradle” of the sixteenth-century‘s art and of the Italian Renaissance art and architecture, because of its outstanding historical buildings, monuments, and museums (among them the “Galleria degli Uffizi”, the “Galleria Palatina”, the “Bargello” and the “Palazzo Pitti” museums).
It is well known as one of the most beautiful and important cities in the world.
The historical city centre was recognised as a UNESCO heritage in 1982. It is characterised by circular streets surrounded by the old Medieval city walls which embrace the most historical cultural assets of the city.
The city centre can be appreciated by admiring it from the surrounding hills, above all from the “Forte Belvedere”, from the “Piazzale Michelangelo” with the Romanesque Basilica of “San Miniato al Monte” and from the “Fiesole” hill which offers one of the most charming views of the Arno valley.
The Arno river, which crosses the city, has a special mark in Florence history. Among Arno’s bridges the “Ponte Vecchio” is unique in the world and lined with jewellery shops built along it.
In the Medieval streets of the “Golden Pig” market, you can stop to taste the famous “Bistecca alla Fiorentina” “Pappa al pomodoro” and “Panzanella”.
