Cagliari has about 158,000 inhabitants (478,000 including the suburbs), and is the administrative centre of the province of Cagliari and of the “Regione Autonoma della Sardegna”. It is the seat of Cagliari University and of the archiepiscopal (Cagliari archidiocese).
In order to discover the history of the city and the whole of Sardinia, it is recommended to start the visit from the national archaeological museum, which is considered the most important in the world for its Nuraghic culture and for its wealth of Phoenician-Punic collections.
Evidence of the Roman rule is the Roman Amphitheatre, which dates back to the II century, it is used nowadays for musical and theatre events, after being covered at the end of XX century, with wood and metal.
Another important destination is the “Basilica di San Saturnino”, the oldest church in Sardinia, built in the V century and revamped in the Romanesque Age, has been recently restructured and re-consecrated. The church and the nearby necropolis, which spreads under the city near the church of San Lucifero, are one of the most important and oldest sites of the early Christian period in Sardinia.
Of notable interest is the fortified district of “Castello” which, until the second world war, was the residence of the nobles in the area, and from which narrow streets lead to the characteristic artisan shops.
“Santa Maria di Castello” Cathedral, commonly known as “Duomo” (Cathedral), provides visitors with a view of a mix of different artistic styles, with over seven centuries of historic memories of the city of Cagliari. Another characteristic of Cagliari are the Pisan towers of “San Pancrazio”, “dell’Elefante” and “dell’Aquila”.
It is worth visiting the Stampace, Marina and Villanova districts.
10 minutes from the city centre you will find the Poetto beach, which is 8km long stretching from “Sella del Diavolo” (“Devil’s Saddle”) to Quartu Sant’Elena. It is an ideal place to relax and to sip a coffee during the hot afternoons, or, to enjoy a plate of pasta with sea-urchins, in the many kiosks available. During the summer, Poetto beach is the soul of the Cagliari nightlife, with countless kiosks which offer live music and great entertainment for all concerned.
